What is Glide2x.dll?link

Fixing a corrupted OS with a Mac is easier since Apple enables downloading a fresh copy of macOS while booting to Recovery Mode (Command + R) and it doesn't have that pesky activation issues in Windows and you still can't download a new copy of Windows 10 while booted to Recovery Mode. I have a computer at the office that has Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 installed. Sometimes I use this computer remotely (RDP or SSH) and need to reboot into different operating system. To switch from Linux to Windows I just run 'sudo reboot' an Windows will load automatically as it's selected as default in grub. However changing back is difficult.

This summer I have had really bad weather so I have been in front of my computer to much. I have been trying different hypervisors over the years. ESXi, don’t like, no easy and free backup solution; Proxmox, to much updates och restarts if you do not pay for the enterprise repos. Last time I used it it renamed all my interfaces so that only 2 worked, i haven’t time for that; OmniOS with bhyve. Omnios is the king regarding network management for virtual machines, it is a dream to use. Unfortunately did one of my VMs lock up, again and again. You could not restart it, not ping it. You had to restart the whole host. Not good, I don’t know why. FreeBSD with bhyve. I really like FreeBSD, one of my favorite OS of all time. But I am not to fond of the network management, compared to Solaris/OmniOS Crossbow all fade in comparison. So let’s introduce XCP-ng. It is not perfect. I still does not know to to start my VMs in my chosen order. But XCP-ng has other qualities. It is really stable, you don’t have a new kernel requiring a reboot every week, you have Xen Orchestra (xoa/web), or XCP-ng Center (if in Windows). You can run Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and OpenBSD without problem. It is fast.

So today I did take a chance. I moved my trusted Supermicro motherboard (X10SLH-F) to my NAS case. Installed XCP-ng, did a pci passthrough of my LSI HBA and a Intel i350x2:

… and installed FreeBSD as my NAS OS. FreeBSD discovered my 8 harddrives and Intel ethernet and imported the old pool. It all worked out perfect.

XCP-ng is rather minimal as i should be, based on CentOS. The installation looks like the old Red Hat or IPCop installation. I really like it. I prefer text installations, they are fast and efficient. When XCP-ng is installed you have three alternatives. Use the Windows Client XCP-ng Center and install som vm to host Xen Orchestra on, download Xen Orchestra directly from them or use the cli. I must say that the cli is rather cumbersome in xen.

I installed Debian via XCP-ng Center, installed Xen Orchestra, connected my 2 XCP-ng hosts, installed FreeBSD [2vCPU, 16GB ram] and imported my pool [8 raidz2 pool). And from there reinstalled all my vm from backup. It was really quick. So we will now learn in a couple of weeks how stable this setup is. I hope i have not made a mistake.

So i now have 11 virtual machines on 2 XCP-ng hosts:

  • MariaDB = Devuan 10
  • Emby = Debian 10
  • Home Assistant = Ubuntu 18.04
  • Logserver = OpenBSD 6.7
  • NAS = FreeBSD 12.1
  • Observium = FreeBSD 12.1
  • Omada (TP-Link Controller Software) = Devuan 9
  • PKI = (ssl-admin) = FreeBSD 12.1
  • SSH = FreeBSD 12.1
  • Subsonic = Ubuntu 18.04
  • Xoa = Debian 10

Prior to this i ran XCP-ng about 6 months, then tried FreeBSD bhyve, Omnios Zones and bhyve, Proxmox (which was a disaster) and come to the conclusion that XCP-ng is the most stable, easiest hypervisor to use. It was hard to find any real reviews of XCP-ng out there.

What is bad about all of this hypervisors. The bad is that is hard to migrate from one to another. ESXi for example is very stable, have great network possibilities, open source drivers, works with all OSes out there but backup was hard. Proxmox have a great big community, it works usually well, Debian as base. I like Debian. But I does not like the frequent updates and that we have to be testing updates for the stable repo. And I really hated how my network stopped working, haven’t seen that before. I have 6 network ports in the server. I don’t know if it’s a bug in Debian or Proxmox, but surely we can say that it was a systemd bug. OmniOS is really nice but the freezing of my VM was discerning. Bhyve on FreeBSD works better for every day but network configuration is not really up to par.

I really hope that you pass by XCP-ng and check it out.
